Reading Robots
Written by Kristin Lundberg on March 02, 2004To continue the tradition of community outreach, the Shelton High School Robotics Team has once again participated in the Read Across America Program with one of the local elementary schools. This year, the team paid two visits to Mohegan Elementary School. The purpose of these visits was to promote the importance of reading to the elementary children and to demonstrate the importance of science and technology.
During the first visit in March, the entire Robotics team went to Mohegan School and demonstrated how some of the past robots worked. The students got the chance see these robots in action, watch a video about the FIRST program, and interact with current team members and mentors. After the presentation, one Robotics team member went to each of the elementary school classrooms and read a book related to science and technology to the class.
When the team returned to Mohegan school in May, it was party time. The purpose of this visit was to have an ice cream party with the students who successfully completed the Read Across America program. It was their reward for the great job they did reading eight books on technology-related subjects.
The Robotics team enjoys participating in the program each year because it gives them the chance to inspire children not only to read, but also to be interested in science and technology and the FIRST program.
