24 Hours of Honor
Written by Samantha Lipscomb on June 04, 2004The sky is dark, but vision isn?t a problem. Hundreds of candles have been lit, honoring those who have survived cancer, and those who lost the battle. People young and old walk the track, holding their candles and remembering their loved ones.
This is the candlelight vigil at Relay for Life, the 24-hour walkathon benefiting the American Cancer Society. On June 5-6th, the Gaelhawks participated in this event, setting up multiple tents and staying the full 24-hours. Members took shifts, walking for an hour at a time throughout the two days. Demonstrations of the robot took place in our front tent, and people could make donations to the American Cancer Society and play catch with the machines. Other booths were set up around the track, selling raffle tickets, food, and even allowing students to pie their own teacher. Songs were played on loudspeakers throughout the day, including some pieces by the Shelton High Drama Club?s Tommy. Multitudes of people were there, supporting this wonderful event. The Gaelhawks were proud to take part in the Relay, and were pleased to be able to donate to such a worthy cause. Team members enjoyed themselves, and definitely plan on participating in later years.
