Read Across America
Written by Samantha Lipscomb on March 03, 2006The Gaelhawks not only spread the message of FIRST by competing in regional competitions and appealing to sponsors. Team 230 also focuses on targetting a younger audience, one that can be excited about a future involved with the team. On March 3rd, members of the Shelton High School Robotics Team ventured to Sunnyside Elementary School in order to participate in their Read Across America program. Stressing the importance of science, technology and reading, the Gaelhawks demonstrated their most recent robot, Talon VII, and read books to the students. The children were in awe as the robot continuously scored balls in the portable 3-point goal, cheering with every ball that went through the ring. Members of team 230 later split up, each reading a Dr. Seuss or technology related book to a class of students within the school. FIRST trivia games were later played, and students were able to bring home Gaelhawk shirts and buttons. Students are expected to read eight books on any topic in six weeks, so that when the team return in May, the children can celebrate with an ice cream party. The Gaelhawks are excited to be able to spread the message of FIRST to such a young audience, and are always working to spread the message farther. The team looks forward to returning to Sunnyside Elementary School to find that every student has read the required amount of books! Good luck to all students!
